What is an Oral Appliance for Snoring & Sleep Apnea?

An oral appliance for snoring & sleep apnea is a small custom made Medically Prescribed custom dental device, similar to a removable orthodontic retainer. It is worn during sleep to improve the function of the upper airway by increasing its size and reducing its ability to collapse. Some oral appliances hold the lower jaw forward during sleep while others have a direct effect on tongue position. Oral appliances for snoring and sleep apnea work by improving the passage of air flow and by preventing the tongue from collapsing against the back of the throat. Narrowing of the airway produces Snoring and collapse causes obstructive Sleep Apnea. Although oral appliances are not appropriate for everyone, a properly selected well-made, well-fitted oral appliance will reduce or eliminate snoring, and can significantly relieve symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

C-PAP Alternative Treatment or Traditional C-PAP?

A C-PAP machine is a common treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea. It pumps air through the nose, while you sleep, preventing the collapse of the airway. This is the treatment of choice for Severe Sleep Apnea. Unfortunately many people cannot tolerate C-PAP and abandon it after a short period of time. Gillum Dentistry offers an effective and comfortable C-PAP alternative treatment called Oral Appliance Therapy. An Oral Appliance for sleep apnea holds the lower jaw forward and slightly open to help maintain an open airway reducing snoring & sleep apnea. Oral Appliances are an effective, comfortable and non-invasive C-PAP alternative for patients with comfortable jaw movement and healthy natural teeth. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine states that oral appliance therapy is appropriate for patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea and patients who prefer them as an alternative to a C-PAP machine.  Severe sleep apnea patients can wear a C-PAP machine in conjunction with an oral appliance to dramatically reduce the air pressure flow making C-PAP much more comfortable and effective!
